Solstice Volunteer Opportunities
Its easier than ever to sign up to be a volunteer (online sign up is under construction.) Please email volunteer (at) fremontartscouncil.org if interested in any of these opportunities.
Before the Parade
Workshop Moms / Pops
(May 21st – June 17th, Workshop Hours, M-F 6-9pm, Sat & Sun 12-5)
Would you like to help people as they make masks, create puppets, decorate floats, & work on their costumes, or show people around who are just coming in to the Power House to get their hands involved in making some art? Workshop Moms/Pops help people navigate the workshop space by helping them find materials, offering kind smiles and support, and helping our artists and participants leave the space clean & organized. Sign up for a shift or three!
(36 shifts available!)
Grub Gurus
(during open Workshop Hours, M-F 6-9pm, Sat & Sun 12-5)
Do you enjoy cooking or baking and would like to share your culinary talents with this artistic community? We want to feed the creative energy and keep grub in the Power House during workshop hours. Many cooks make a full belly, so bring on down food to share during the build.
We have many local businesses who also donate food & we want to thank them for their generosity & Rodman for facilitating!
(Bring food on down, the more the merrier, yum! Please make sure it is enough to feed about 8 people.)
Moonlight Movers (& Shakers) Float move
(night before the parade – Fri June 17th, after dusk)
They are big, they are heavy, and they must be moved! In the wee hours of the night when others in the city may be sleeping, we will join forces, trolls & goblins & solstice merriment makers to move the floats to the parade start point (36th & Leary.) This is your test to do a test run with your float, the ONLY one you’ll get. (For this job: don’t forget your things-that-go-blink in the night.)
(9-13 people, each ensemble: expect to move YOUR float)
Parade Day
Saturday June 18th
Monitors
(10:30am-2:30pm: before & during parade, along parade route)
This possibly the most important job during the parade and the one which receives the most kudos! Do you like wearing a uniform? Is it in your nature to give kind, but firm reminders of the rules? This may be a job for you!
Monitors must attend an orientation meeting prior to the parade.
(30-50 people)
Check-in Divas
(8:30am-12:15pm, @ parade starting point)
Floats, ensembles & participants will all start congregating and getting organized in the staging area for the parade. You can help make sure they are registered, help keep track of everyone, and make sure everyone has all the info they need to have a safe, sane, and joyous parade.
(4-8 people)
Chalk Fairies
(10:30-12:30pm parade route)
Distribute chalk along parade route. After streets close people can busy themselves with making the street beautiful for the oncoming parade. This would be an ideal activity for a group & we may be having a Fairy Wing Workshop to make some new flutterers, should you need a pair.
(10-20 people)
SOL Distributors
(10am-12pm, along parade route)
Do you think the world could use a little more SOL? We want you to help us deliver the SOL (the Fremont Solstice Parade newspaper) along the parade route, just before the parade.
Dressing like a vicar or person-of-the-cloth & yelling “I’ve got your SOL right here! Who needs a SOL!” is highly encouraged, but not necessary!
(10-14 people)
SAG-Wagon Driver (+Truck)
Parade participants can’t carry all their stuff with them, so we have a SAG-wagon to stow it in. We need a driver (and someone with a van who can drive thiss stuff around, way around the parade route to Gas Works park after the parade launches. Let us know if you have a van or would be interested in being the driver.)
Foot massage offered for this one from our Solstice Director!
(2 people)
Float Parkers
(1pm-3pm, Gas Works parking lot)
Always wanted to be at the end of the parade as the floats are pulling in to park. We need people to help parking these beautiful art pieces in the parking lot at Gas Works park. Bring your friends ~ it will be fun! And you get to wear one of those cute safety vests & feel official!
(8-10 people)
Hospitality Hosts
(Gasworks Park, Hospitality Tend, directly after parade – until 4pm)
Would you like to help our weary performers relax after a long successful parade?
Our Hospitality Hosts will help maintain a clean, quite space for our performers to relax and get a bit of rest after their efforts in the parade.
(8-10 people for shifts)
Gasworks Grabbers: Clean-up Crew
(Gasworks Park, parade day 6/18, 4:30-6:30pm)
Gasworks is a lovely beautiful venue for everyone to enjoy
the Solstice with family & friends. Let’s make sure we keep it like we found it! Crew of grabbers will help to clean up the park (FAC hires a garbage crew for that part) & getting it back in shape
once the celebrations start to wind down. We’ll also need a couple of trucks to help shuttle stuff back to the Powerhouse.
(10-14 people)

Post-Parade Rock and Rollers
We’re not done yet!!!
Float Break-down Team
(Gasworks, 4-6pm Sunday 6/19 – then dinner with everyone!)
Sad but necessary, we need a team of folks to show up and help deconstruct the floats. This is a melancholy, but team spirit activity.
Then, we all go get dinner and share stories from the day before. Please make time for this post-parade fun!! (3 people+ FROM EACH ENSEMBLE, you built it, you gotta bury it!)
We’ll need trucks w/ tow hitches to put the floats into storage (if you bring a truck, you get even more adoration & kudos!)
Powerhouse Re-instatement
(Powerhouse, 3-6pm, Sunday, 6/19)
What a disaster we create when we have fun!! Come help us put it back together on.
