May Day 3pm Sunday

We take over the field and weave the May-pole! 

May Day Celebration and Potluck takes place at Woodland Park (just off  Aurora and 60th, next to the horseshoe courts).

~ Don’t forget to bring your frivolous self! (& friends, & family!)

It’s that time of year again …
Spring cleaning time & time for our annual Rummage Solstice fundraiser!
Clean out your closets and garages, lighten your load & feel great while helping your favorite community organization.

at the PowerHouse (3940 Fremont Ave N)
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM



This annual rummage sale is always a fun event to kick off the parade season by raising money for glue, scissors & supplies.
Prior rummage events have raised nearly $3000, this year let’s double that!

Your help is needed!



How can you help?

1) DONATE!
We graciously receive your treasured cast-offs… Household items, gently used or unusual items are gladly accepted…furniture, clothing, books, household items, linens, lamps, sports equipment and other goods. Particularly rare or valuable items are needed for the silent auction department. Mattresses, computers, TVs and appliances will not be accepted.

Dave McKay Solstice Parade Grants 2011

Dave McKay 2011 Solstice Parade Grant RFP

The Dave McKay Parade Grant program supports the development of art and performance for the Fremont Solstice Parade.

In 2011, the Fremont Arts Council will award grants up to $1,000 from a total pool of $4,500.

~

Dave McKay was a celebration artist who brought his master costume-design skills, thoughtful intention, and deep attention to detail and craftsmanship to all his art, especially in his work with the Fremont Solstice Parade and Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration. He believed art and art-making should be a part of everyone’s life.  The primary goal of the Dave McKay Parade Grant is to honor his memory by supporting artists in their efforts to bring engaging art to the parade and enhancing the spirit of creative community collaboration.

The Fremont Arts Council (FAC) is a community-based celebration arts organization. We value volunteer-ism; community participation; artistic expression; and the sharing of arts skills. The Fremont Solstice Parade is the defining event of the FAC.  We celebrate the longest day of the year through profound street theater, public spectacle, and a kaleidoscope of joyous human expressions.  We welcome the participation of everyone regardless of who they are, or what they think or believe. However, The FAC reserves the right to control the content presented in the Fremont Solstice Parade.

The rules of the Fremont Solstice Parade, which make this event distinct from other types of parades, are:

  • No written or printed words or logos
  • No animals (except service animals)
  • No motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs)
  • No weapons or fire

Grant Funds:
Grant funds may be used for artists’ fees, materials and supplies, equipment purchase or rental, travel and transportation. Existing artwork can be re-mounted for parade exhibition. Grant funds can NOT be used to stage fundraising events; for project expenses that occur prior to or after the project dates; or for operating costs not directly associated with the parade project.

FAC most often funds proposals from artists for the development of parade ensembles.  Proposals for parade-related art installations (Gasworks park, gateways, etc.,) and other fantastical ideas we have yet to dream of, are also accepted for funding consideration.

Selection:
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of FAC members and Solstice Parade Staff. This is a competitive process and, unfortunately, not every applicant will receive funding. Special consideration will be given to:

  • Creating the project in our public workshop
  • Large-scale projects that use the 360 degree space of the street theater
  • Use of recycled materials
  • Directly engaging the audience along the parade route
  • Kinetic movement
  • Thought-provoking and innovative ensembles

1. Narrative:

Write a short narrative describing your proposed project. Describe your intention or theme; What are your ensemble elements (dancers/floats/puppets?); Does your ensemble include music or sound?; What will your ensemble be doing during the parade?  Will there be audience participation/interaction?

2. People:

Do you plan to use volunteers in creating your project? What skills are needed to work on this project? Will you be bringing new volunteers into the project? How many artists will be directly involved in this project?  If your project requires many people, how will you find them?
3. Workspace:

Each year the FAC sets up and maintains a community art studio for the purpose of building the parade. Do you plan on using the Fremont Arts Council parade building space to create your project?  If so, please describe what your workspace needs will be (days/times/activities.)

4. Timeline:

Please provide a timeline of your project. Is your project accomplishable? Is it designed for a high probability of success?

5.  Skill Sharing:

Would you be willing to share skills or to build the project with FAC members or the broader community? If so, please describe how you will do this. Do you plan to hold public workshops or classes while building your ensemble?

6. As a Grantee:

Briefly explain how you intend to use the Dave McKay Parade Grant (Budget detail to be included in another category).  Include the following information: How will the grant allow you to improve the quality of your work?

How does your project support the principles of the Fremont Arts Council? (These principles are found on our website: fremontartscouncil.org)

Please limit your answers to these questions to three pages; less is more.

Along with this application, please submit:

  • Resumes or bios of key artistic personnel (max. 1 page per person)
  • Sketches: A picture is worth a thousand words.  Sketches of your ensemble elements are helpful for the selection committee.
  • Budget: Please include as detailed budget as possible of estimated costs/expenditures for your ensemble.   (e.g.-breakout estimates for materials, labor, artist fee, equipment rental, or other line items) Is this project amenable to partial funding? Are there other sources of funding or in-kind support to feed the project?
  • Examples: Any artwork, press, video or audio recordings that will support your application. Up to 5 digital images.

All applications MUST be digitally received by 5 pm, Monday, April 4th, 2011.
