Join us for workshops using multiple techniques, allowing you the opportunity to directly make art for the 30th Annual Fremont Solstice Parade! Feel free to come to 1 or all of the workshops. You will be building friendly fairy-like creatures that cavort and fly above the street in a playful dance in the Joiboi Giant Puppet Ensemble, conceived by long-time Fremont Arts Council artist Sarah Lovett. Pick up a useful technique or join this playful ensemble. Ensemble participants will create their own costumes and fabulous headpieces and carry or interact with these puppets in the parade. Sarah will be available for consultation on other lightweight techniques for your own pieces.

Instruction on using reed to create volume and structure for puppets and luminaries. The focus will be to create two puppet heads designed by the artist.
On Saturday, we will learn to work with wet reed to lay down our designs. You will take away the foundation technique used by Sarah Lovett for puppets; Dogody, Owl, Rainbow Serpent, Coyle, and the Seahorse luminary. On Sunday we will pull up the reed and begin gluing and forming. We will learn reinforcement techniques using round reed zip ties and glue.

Everyone is welcome; appropriate for teens and adults.

Fairy Wing Workshop

  • Sunday, June 3, 1-4 pm

From the Artist:

“Hello, my name is Lonness Valenna , a 35 year-old trans and intersex woman. I’m currently vice chair of the Gender Alliance of the South Sound, a nonprofit support and social group for the transgender community. I go by the moniker “The Trans Fairy Godmother” for the help I’ve given to people starting out during their transition — including providing a place to stay for transgender people who find themselves homeless.

This work shop project is for making fairy wings out of paper, cellophane, and laminate material. They look amazing inside and outside. Perfect for parades or just having fun with the kids. In our lovely world of diversity there’s never a bad time for fairy wings.”

In Celebration of the Fremont Solstice Parade turning 30, The Green Hat Ensemble is flashing back to when it alllll began….1989! Come help put the “fun” in fundraising and get your 80’s on! We’ll be raiding the rad costume room for our 80’s costumes and working on our righteous moves with the Green Hats, while listening to some gnarly tunes. It’s going to be, like, totally tubular!!

Sunday, June 10, 3-5 pm

350 Seattle is hosting a batik workshop! Learn how to batik on small swatches of fabric. This is in preparation for work on their Silent Butterfly Wings for their #FremontSolsticeParade ensemble Cool World. >

Both the workshop AND the ensemble are open to all! No special skills required. They will show you how!

Batik is a beautiful form of wax resist fabric dying in which wax is melted and used to created lines which then contain die. The wax resist process traces its roots back over 2,000 years to Egypt, China, India, Japan, Nigeria, and Senegal. But the specific batik artform was most highly developed in the island of Java in Indonesia.

Lisa Marcus will lead the workshop. She first learned to batik with the Fremont Arts Council 16 years ago, and has been using the technique in community art projects ever since to create beauty for awareness, and inspiration to join in creating the healthy future we want and need.

You Power the House! Thank you!
